From acne remedies to under-eye creams, the skincare industry is continuing to flourish and consumers cannot get enough. In the past, skincare was used by older women who wanted to reduce wrinkles and smooth their skin. Today, the world is full of internet personas and judgments that the younger generations now have a more crucial impact on the skincare industry. Everyone wants to put their best face forward, especially on the internet, so the skincare market is booming with business. Celebrities and influencers continue to post their sponsorships with popular skincare brands, however, consumers are beginning to realize the hidden secrets of the industry.
Many brands use foreign chemicals in their products that can damage the skin when used, and some products have been linked to high amounts of mercury. With this exposure, consumers are changing their habits and buying from more health-conscious and all-natural brands such as Herbivore Botanicals, Drunk Elephant, and Biossance. Despite the change in demand in the skincare industry, the FDA does not regulate skin care products, but rather observes the products. The FDA will check for correct labeling of ingredients, but does not regulate the ingredients used in the product itself. The most the FDA has done is put a maximum amount of mercury that can be used in products, which they say is okay for consumers to use. Fortunately, consumers are making the right decision to switch to all-natural brands and are protecting their beautiful skin from harsh chemicals.
